Just when you think you have some idea all figured out, along comes a story that 'gob-smacks' you.
Background: I watched a TV special last week on PBS about the joys of having breakfast, at a series of small family-run restaurants across the U-S-A, from Ohio to Oregon.
As I have been celebrating breakfast since I was a 'wee tad' (which, Dear Reader, was many years ago) — at the insistence of my Mother — I was delighted to identify with those folks.
I also began to recall the childhood and current ’treat' of going out for a good breakfast.
Not for a minute, Dear Reader, was it a case of getting away from a poor breakfast, or having none at all.
Au contraire.
We simply wanted to have a treat!
Doing Internet research, I clicked on a title about -- Heaven forbid -- breakfast as not so necessary for good health! And citing nutritionists, too!
This article,
Breakfast Downgraded From 'Most Important Meal of the Day' to 'Meal', outlines the heated discussions among nutritionists about the importance of having a good breakfast.
The sub-title, ‘Today the pendulum of science defends breakfast skippers,’ reveals simply that their Mothers’ advice fell on deaf ears!
My world as I know it began to flash in front of my eyes. I had to read the article TWICE before it registered!
Was nothing sacred?
I sat there dumbfounded in front of my screen. I was 'shooken,’ I still find it far-fetched.
I still BELIEVE in having a good breakfast.
Here, in no apparent order, are some of my most memorable breakfast foods:
Bacon and fried / poached eggs. Omelets. Eggs Benedict.(Lots of eggs, especially on Easter Sunday morning!)
Sausages. Baloney. Smelts: yes, pan-fried smelts!
Oatmeal porridge, (but not ’Cream-of-Wheat': eeew!).
Cereal: Shredded wheat. Granola.
Whole wheat toast: dipped in thick cream!
Corn bread. Muffins. Scones. Bread, and Donuts (still warm): My grandfather’s recipes, partaken while 'staying-over’ at his house.
‘Brioches:’ French pastry, in a small deli in Montreal!
Pancakes, especially with blueberries. Crepes. Fish cakes.
Orange marmalade / blueberry jam / peanut butter.
With:
coffee / tea / milk, tomato juice / smoothie.
My Strangest breakfast?
When you can't sleep? perhaps from too much studying?
Visit I-HOP (International House of Pancakes) for a big meal and hot coffee at 3:30 a.m., then come home and sleep like a baby -- or hit the books again, to ace a morning exam!
What do YOU like for breakfast?
Bon appétit!
