Olympian Spirit - 1

The CBC is providing extensive coverage of the Olympic Winter Games now underway in Sochi, Russia: on TV, radio and the Internet. And they can be proud of their work!
The Games are presented throughout the morning and early afternoons (because of the 8-hour time difference), and highlight packages are available during the evenings. Of course, all Canadian team hockey games men's and women's, are shown live.
In our society, we often hear of some negative behaviours expected or shown by the younger generation. During these games, however, we have witnessed many members of our team who have made us proud by their performances in the games, as well as with the media.
I am particularly impressed by these young people (and they ARE young, aren't they!!) for their excellent poise and sporting behaviour when they are interviewed.
It must be tough having to speak to a camera and microphone when you have just done the performance of your life, have given your all, and have not advanced or earned a medal.
The Canadian team have experienced a lot of highs and lows during the first 8 days of competition:
— We have medals in Ski Boarding and even Alpine Skiing!
— One of the contestants in Men's Short Track Speed Skating was injured in practise, and ceded his place to a teammate, who promptly went out and won a silver medal!
— Members of the Figure Skating teams have allegedly been the victims of a Russian-American judging conspiracy to deny gold medals to the Canadians.
(Skeptics would say, Dear Reader, that you cannot stage the Winter Olympics without a figure skating scandal, but conspiracy reports in the French sports newspaper, ‘L’Équipe’ have persisted!)
— The Men's Hockey and Women's Hockey (I absolutely refuse to call them ‘ice hockey’) teams are both in their respective semifinals.
— The Women's Curling Team (8-0 in the round-robin) and the Men's Curling Team (who started out 0-2, but are now 6-2) are also in their semifinals.
We will continue listening and watching these amazing young Canadians, and discussing their performances.
