Over the last few weeks at our house, the project has been “clean out the basement of extra stuff.”
You may think that it's a regular event with us, but I want to point out that we moved into our house SEVENTEEN years ago!
Since both of us are retired teachers, we got to amass a lot of teaching materials in our respective classrooms. Some of those are still good, but many were outdated, since today's students preferred to consult the Internet. Some of the boxes had “useful” items in them, but many contained the last remaining collection of old books.
We also collected A LOT of books: some large 'coffee table' books, but mainly novels and mysteries.
What to do with old books? We hesitate to put them in the recycle/garbage bins, because most of them are in excellent condition, so we had to explore ideas about getting them to “good homes.”
And so, after checking with the officials, we donated them to the two seniors residences we visit every week as Mass volunteers.
There are still three huge moving boxes of books downstairs, which we will get to . . . soon.
Some of the saddest moments came, though, when I had to cull my collection of ceramic and plastic frogs.
Yes, Dear Reader, I collect frogs, while my wife collects bells!
However, I was brave and kept only a few of my favourite frogs.
The unpacking project continues.
