The department stores around here have already put up their displays and set out materials for their “Back to School” campaigns.
Wait a minute . . . it’s only the third week of July!!!
Enough, already!
I understand there are a few “givens”:
-- Some pupils bring teacher-prepared lists of materials they must buy for the Fall.
-- Some school boards – in New Brunswick and in SOME U.S. States -- mandate a return to school by August 15. (They close by mid-June or the last of May.)
I get that.
But … why are we ALL being subjected to "Back to School" campaigns so early?
Please let the youngsters … and their teachers … enjoy some time for re-creation.
We are both retired teachers in this household, and during the many years / terms we were 'in harness' we could not bring ourselves to utter that dreaded phrase, "Back to School" in our house, until the final week of August.
Lest you think, Dear Reader, that all I want to do is 'rant' here, I offer a positive spin: we both get a big kick from the "Staples" campaign: "It's the most wonderful time of the year!"
