Look Out, World!

Here we are, at mid-point in the two-week celebration of winter sports , the 2011 Halifax Canada Winter Games.
The first week has been a big success ... plenty of great performances by young athletes from all over Canada, with good weather and well-attended events.
For up-to-date results and summaries, you can check out the 2011 Canada Winter Games website.

A big hit at the Games has been the H-R-M Speed Skating Oval on the Halifax Commons, where records were set in almost all events. During the past few weeks, thousands of citizens of all ages and skating abilities had a chance to ‘test the facility,’ and pronounced it ‘wonderful.’ There is a big move, among the general population and civic officials, along with a growing petition, to make the Oval permanent. H-R-M has a webcam showing a great view of the Skating Oval.

The big disappointment has been the lack of wide TV coverage by TSN and its parent company, CTV. The Opening Ceremonies and daily two-hour coverage have been presented on TSN2, which is not available on basic cable.
Their short list of TV highlights is available here.
Eastlink cable has contracted to broadcast the TSN2 events of the second week on its basic cable throughout Atlantic Canada.
Our local daily newspaper, the Chronicle Herald, is publishing entire sections on the Games , in its regular print editions and on the Internet, with event schedules and results, plenty of side-bar stories on athletes from all across Canada, and great color photos.

The Bell Aliant company is showing a live stream of most events , produced by volunteer / student crews. It’s strictly a ‘raw feed,’ with excellent camera coverage, but no commentary -- just as if you were cheering on the athletes right in the stands. You can get the info. from the on-site scoreboards and the P.A. announcements -- in both official languages, too!
They are also webcasting daily entertainment events from Celebration Square in Halifax.
Look Out, World! is the name of the first official Canada Games fight-song, by Canadian composer, Dolores Claman for the first Canada Summer Games in Halifax, in August, 1969.
We’re proud to be hosting the 2011 Halifax Jeux du Canada Games, and proud of the efforts of all the athletes, their families, coaches, and officials.
