I have always been fascinated by radio. Even as a child of four or five, I wondered how they could get those people, the announcers and the musicians, into that little box!
Throughout my life, I have had to make this bold statement: My name is Colin, and I am a news junkie. My first brush with the news was by radio, followed closely by newspapers -- dailies, weeklies, anything I could get my hands on. My mother ensured that I was an early reader, so I needed a lot of material for practice.
In the early 1950s, radio where I lived was made up of country music, big band music -- which soon became rock ‘n roll, and serial programs such as, The Shadow, Our Miss Brooks, and The Cisco Kid. News reports talked about the war in Korea.
I don’t know how old I was when I decided that I wanted to be in radio when I grew up. But 60 years later, while I have “dabbled” in various aspects of radio, the process of broadcasting -- which I may never fully understand -- still fascinates me.
Radio has been a parade of musical styles; spoken word styles have changed, but ... it's still radio.
It has not been an easy relationship; for some periods, I almost gave up on radio, which presented nonstop mindless chatter with loud, thumping beats of music from across the spectrum. Remember disco? At other times, I have been caught up in and thoroughly enjoyed whatever style I was involved in.
So, dear reader, please consider this posting as an introduction to my con-tin-u-ing sto-ry with radio.
Who knows, you may even find it interesting!
